Arbre hévéa

Latex
Latex is obtained from the sap of rubber trees. The Mayas and Aztecs thought it was a magical substance, for it was both elastic and waterproof. Nowadays it is used to make balloons. To obtain the precious liquid incisions are made in the bark of the rubber tree and the latex gradually drips out. It is collected after two or three hours and taken to a factory for processing.

C = circumference : diameter x 3,14
R = radius
D = diameter : radius x 2

Choosing balloons
1. The thicker balloons are the tougher they are.
- Feel the balloon to assess its thickness and resistance.
- Weigh it to determine exactly how much latex it contains.
2. Ensure that it is regularly shaped and that there are no marks.
3. Test its quality by leaving it a few days on a shelf once it is inflated.

Measuring balloons
The size of a balloon may be measured by its diameter, its circumference, its radius or its volume. The easiest approach
is to compare the diameter
of the various balloons on offer. Of course you must start by inflating them.

Storing balloons
1. Keep balloons in a dark place, away from artificial light or sunlight.
2. Before inflating a balloon, warm it in your hand, then stretch it to make it more supple.

Inflating balloons
1. If you want your balloon to fly you must inflate it with helium.
2. If you want to place it somewhere or hang it up inflate it with air, using an appropriate pump.
NB : do not pump up too hard and never as far as the limit. Always leave a little space. Before tying the knot, release a little air.

When inflating balloons for outdoor, use, remember that the amount of air inside the balloon will increase as it heats up. If it's hot, do not fully inflate. Leave about 15% margin. This will reduce the risk of them bursing.

NB :
to compare the various balloons on offer you must first inflate them in
order to compare their diameter and shape.
